CPHC Weekly News

Surprise! I’m actually EARLY with the newsletter this week! That’s because while there are no Parrot Head events this weekend, Chris and I are getting ready to spend several days enjoying all the beers at the Great American Beer Festival. We’ll be at each of the first three sessions, so if you go to the fest, be on the lookout for us!

But before we start on the beer, let’s get to the news… .

Halloween Parade Questions & Answers

Last week I sent a bunch of info about the Colorado Parrot Head Club participating in the 1st Annual Broadway Halloween Parade. If you missed it, I’m going to include all the details again, below. However there were a few additional questions I wanted to address today. Here’s some new info:

Can we bring guests? Kids?  Yes! If you wish to bring a few friends or even some kiddos along to march in the parade with us, we are fine with that. This is a community, family event, and the more the merrier. That being said, anyone walking with us should be in costume. Remember, we’re the PHLOCKING DEAD. So think tropical, pirate or parrot head zombies. Make sure you and your friends/family are in a Halloween costume, ideally one that fits our theme, since that’s what this parade is all about.

One other thing to remember is that we’ll be gathering at The Fainting Goat after the parade, and the bar may not be as kid friendly as the parade. I’ll try to confirm their rules by next week so you can plan accordingly.

Can I ride the float? Maybe. We hope to have space for people who really need to ride, but I cannot confirm that just yet. Pete’s been traveling the world and I’ve been busy, so I haven’t been able to hook up with him about the float. We’ll touch base soon and I’ll have more info on this. To be clear, if we do have room for riders it will only be people who need to ride because they can’t walk the route.

Who else is participating?  Lots of fun groups are participating! Check out the About section of the parade web page at broadwayhalloweenparade.com/about and scroll down to see the parade entrants so far. There will be Ghostbusters, a brass band, some tiki zombies… a lot of variety. It should be fun!

Rules: One other thing I’d ask that everyone reviews before parade day are the parade day rules, which you can read here. They are mostly the same as other parades we’ve participated in: no throwing, no holding up the parade, etc. You’ll notice it also says no drinking, and this will be enforced during the route. It’s a short route (you can see the map on the “About” page) so I think you’ll make it. We’ll party after.

Parade details from the last newsletter:

The below is just a copy of what I sent last week, so feel free to skip this if you already read it. If you missed the info last week, here’s all the additional details previously shared:

Reminder! There will be no October meeting at Hopper’s next month. Instead, we’ll be participating in the 1st Annual Broadway Halloween Parade! The parade kicks off at 6pm on Saturday, October 21st! Please save the date & plan on joining us!

Here is what you need to know:

The first thing to keep in mind, this is not the St. Patrick’s parade, meaning we aren’t having big builds or doing anything too elaborate. We wanted to keep it simple and fun, and many of you agreed. And when we chatted with folks about an easy theme one thing kept getting brought up – ZOMBIES. That’s why we decided our theme would be:

The PHLOCKING DEAD!
We not Parrot Heads for life. We’re Parrot Heads for the afterlife, too!

Costumes: We were thinking you could all use your traditional Parrot Head costumes with a little undead, zombie spin. Ghostly pirates would be awesome.. as would tropical zombies, or undead island folks… you get the idea Be creative and spooky!

Float: Pete Grosskreuz is working on our float. Pete has previously designed an award-winning Halloween float, so we feel good that this is in his hands. The trailer is the same one we use for our PWAP stages, so it’s much smaller than our other parade – which means there will be little if any room for riders. I’m not expecting any additional help to go into the build, but if that changes & anything is needed I’ll let everyone know.

Other things to know:

This is a community parade and is very kid friendly. That means NO BOOZE during the parade route. Fortunately, it’s a very, very short parade – just about one mile – so I think you can make it! And because it’s a post-parade tradition, we will all phlock to The Fainting Goat on Broadway to celebrate once the parade is over. Plan on joining your zombie Parrot Head friends at the goat for some liquid treats, and no tricks!

One more note – the biggest challenge we’ll probably have is that the parade route does not loop back to the start. As I mentioned it’s fairly short. We start near Denver General Hospital and end at Broadway and Alameda (near Blue Bonnet). That’s a total of about 1.3 miles. However, we have to get back… there is no return route to the staging area. That being said, and because parking is tough and drinking will commence after the parade, I would recommend carpooling or taking RTD, Uber or Lyft.

What you should do now to get ready for the Halloween parade:

    • Work on your Costumes! You probably have most of the Parrot Head/Pirate gear already, so work on looking your zombie look. Basically, just try and look a little bit worse than you normally do the day after a Parrot Head party!
    • Stock up on Halloween candy for handouts. We will want to have lots of candy for the spectators, so we’re asking everyone to contribute a big bag or two. It is Halloween after all!

We know you have more questions. More info will come. We will send out info on parade day, parade rules, where to park, and where to meet very soon. Watch your emails. If you have any specific questions or suggestions, send them my way. I’ll do my best to get everyone the answers they need.

Next Weekend (October 15th) Latitude will be playing a house concert in Colorado Springs

Just another reminder that Roger and Vicki Sams are hosting Latitude, aka Tom & Michelle Becker, for a house concert at their home in Colorado Springs on October 15. This is sure to be an awesome show!  Contact Roger and Vicki for more details (including their address or directions if you need that to make your decision).  Please RSVP to them if you plan to attend. It should be a fun show!
